Form of Government
In 2017 Newton County became a county manager form of government. This means the appointed county manager runs the day-to-day operations of the county and the elected chair oversees the board of commissioners and its meetings, is the liaison to state and federal legislators and is the face of the county.
The county's new enabling legislation was passed in the state capitol and approved by the board of commissioners in April of 2016 and went into effect in January of 2017.

Newton County also has set in place rules of conduct and ethics dictating how its meetings are run.
