NEWTON COUNTY, GA - Layla Zon will become Newton County’s newest Superior Court Judge when she is sworn in following her appointment by Governor Brian Kemp Thursday, May 21.

Zon, who has served as Newton County’s District Attorney since 2010, will succeed Judge Samuel Ozburn, who retired on April 30.

“I am honored to appoint Layla to serve as a Superior Court Judge of the Alcovy Judicial Circuit,” Kemp said. “As a judge, she will prioritize the business of the court and uphold justice, fairness and decorum.”

Zon began working in the Newton County District Attorney’s office in 2000 after graduating from Georgia State University of College Law. She then was promoted to Chief Assistant District Attorney by then-District Attorney Ken Wynne and appointed to District Attorney upon Wynne’s appointment to Superior Court Judge.

"It is an honor to have received this judicial appointment by Governor Brian Kemp to the Superior Court of Newton and Walton counties," Zon said. "I realize as a Judge I will be entrusted with awesome responsibility to uphold the law and to protect the rights of those in our communities.  I look forward to continuing to serve the citizens of our communities with impartiality, adhering to the oath of office with integrity, and enhancing confidence in our legal system.  I value the rights and protections that the law provides us and I also love people.   I know from my twenty years of experience in the courtroom that the courtroom is a place where people come with problems.  My desire is to serve these people and all of our citizens well by upholding the law and treating all people fairly and respectfully."

Zon, who will become Newton County’s first female Superior Court Judge, also serves as a board member for a Child’s Voice Child Advocacy Center and is president of the District Attorney’s Association of Georgia. She is a former chair of the Newton County Community Partnership Board and has been involved in Leadership Georgia.

“I think Newton County has another wonderful judge in Layla Zon,” said Newton County Chairman Marcello Banes. “I was excited when I heard that Governor Brian Kemp made this historic appointment and look forward to seeing Layla continue to serve the people of Newton County from the bench.”
