Airport, center for future agriculture leaders celebrated on big day for Newton County
Dignitaries were plentiful in Newton County as two new beautiful buildings celebrated grand openings on Tuesday.
Georgia Governor Nathan Deal helped celebrate the opening of the new Terry England Leadership Center at the Georgia FFA/FCCLA Camp, located at 720 FFA FHA Camp Rd, Covington.
The building is named in honor of Terry England of Auburn, who serves as chairman of the Appropriations Committee and co-chair of the Agricultural Education Advisory Committee and is a member of the Agriculture and Consumer Affairs, Education, Industry and Labor, Natural Resources and Environment and Ways and Means committees. The 20,000-square-foot building features a 14,000-square foot room which can seat 1,400 people.
"Great leaders have been produced by virtue of the experiences and the training that they received in FFA, in FCCLA, and in other related type organizations,” Deal said. “We are in the business of training young people. This facility does it about as good as any I have seen, and I think it has not only a great past behind it, but in my opinion, a very, very bright future.”
Hundreds were in attendance to see the Terry England Leadership Center's dedication, including FFA members, General Assembly members from around the state and Newton County elected officials.
Some of those officials were also at a ribbon cutting earlier in the day to celebrate the opening of the new Covington Municipal Airport Terminal.
The 9,000-square-foot building will house a restaurant open to the public, conference center and office space.
Three Covington mayors were on hand for the grand opening ceremony, including current Mayor Ronnie Johnston and former mayors Kim Carter and Sam Ramsey.
The grand opening celebration featured tours of the new facility, located at 14100 State Hwy, 142 Covington.
