The Newton County Board of Commissioners recognized the telecommunicators of Covington’s E-911 Center as First Responders during its Oct. 5 Regular Meeting.

The Board of Commissioners (BOC) unanimously passed a resolution supporting the E-911 Saves Act to properly classify the profession of E-911 Telecommunicators as First Responders.

The BOC stated E-911 Telecommunicators make life-saving, split-second decisions on a daily basis, provide care and compassion to our citizens and go through many hours of training and screening to provide a vital service to the community.

“The Newton County Board of Commissioners recognizes public safety telecommunicators are far from just clerical and supports the national movement to reclassify telecommunicators as first responders and truly recognize the work they do,” the resolution said.
